Accessing the MED Online Directory

NOTE: If you are a dial-in user, first make your dial-in connection to the Internet before trying to access the MED Online Directory.

To access the MED Online Directory using the Web, you will need either Netscape (version 3 or later) or Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 3 or later).  If you want to make modifications to your entry or others in the directory, you will also need a MED domain Login ID and MED domain password.

To access the directory, first launch your Web browser and then go to the following location: http://directory.med.wayne.edu/

Getting Help

The MED Online Directory has an online help system, which is organized by topic, and can be accessed by clicking the Help button in the left-hand column of your Web browser.

Finding an Entry

Looking yourself up in the MED Online Directory is a useful exercise to ensure that all information about you is accurate and as complete as you want it to be. You may want to change, add, or even delete information listed in the directory (for example, adding a fax number or changing an address).

After you launch your Web browser, go to the MED Online Directory (located at http://directory.med.wayne.edu/).

The quickest way to display your entry in the directory is to click the You button in the left-hand column of your Web browser.
Before the directory displays your entry, you will be prompted to "authenticate," that is, prove your identity to the directory. This ensures that only you may modify your entry. Enter your MED domain Login ID and MED domain password, then click Log in.

Another way to search for your entry, or to search for other entries, is to enter the name of the person you want to search for in the "Search for" dialog box. In this example, you are looking for a person whose name matches "Barbara Jensen." You can enter just the last name, first name, or even a couple letters of the first/last name. After entering the name, click Submit.

If you click the "More complex search form" button you will see a dialog box that allows you to specify more options for your search, such as searching by MED domain Login ID, surname, or phone number, or to search for a group. You can also choose to search in the Faculty and Staff or Student portion of the directory.

The Search Results

The MED Online Directory will display information similar to the following.

Click on the entry you wish to view and you will see a screen such as the following.

Changing Your Entry

You may want to change, add, or even delete information listed in the directory; for example, add a fax number or change an address. You may change most of the information in your entry, except your common name and MED domain Login ID (which, for security reasons, can only be edited by the staff who maintain the directory).

To change information in your entry, first display your entry and then click "View or edit entire entry."
If you haven't already authenticated, you will be prompted for your MED domain Login ID and MED domain password. Enter them and then click Log in.

Your entry will now appear with a "change" button in front of each field. Click the "change" button for the field you want to modify.

For example, to change your Office address, click "change Office Address."

A dialog box will appear prompting you for new information. Enter your modified text in the first field. Or, add additional information in the second field.

Click Verify Change when you are done entering information. (Or click the "Cancel Change" link to undo your changes.)

You should then receive a status that your changes have been made and the opportunity to view your info again with the modifications that you made.

Logging Out

When you’ve completed your Online Directory work session, you can quit your Web browser.  Your login info is only used among the directory site and can’t be used or seen once you leave the MED Online Directory site however it is possible to use the Back functions of the web browser to page back to the change info screen and remodify any info there.

Searching Beyond the School of Medicine

The MED Online Directory does not currently allow you to search for entries outside of the Wayne Health. Even if you can't find an entry in the MED Online Directory, you can still send e-mail to that individual or group, if you have their full Internet address, for example, pjohnson@med.wayne.edu

Another strategy for locating people at other universities is to go to the Web site for a particular campus and then look for an Online Directory there. For example, to find someone at Wayne State University, you would go to WSU's Web site, or, to find someone at the University of California at Berkeley, you would go to Berkeley's Web site. Once you get to the university's Web page, look to see if their org has an Online Directory.
